Top Tips to Keep Your Skin Healthy This Spring 2019

With spring comes warmer weather, sunshine, and new growth. It's only fitting that your skin is just as fresh and renewed. To get rid of winter's dry and cracked skin, follow these tips for a healthy springlike glow.

Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate!

Winter often leaves skin feeling dry and flaky. Exfoliating removes those dead cells to reveal the fresher, smoother skin beneath.

Don't make the mistake of going overboard, though. If winter's harsh temperatures damaged the outermost layer of your skin, too much exfoliating can make things worse. Use products designed to be gentle and conditioning. If you don't want to splurge, using your regular soap with a washcloth to gently scrub works too. You don't need to exfoliate every day -- once or twice a week is all it takes.

Stay Hydrated

Nice weather goes hand-in-hand with being more active. The more active you are, the more important it is to stay hydrated. Your skin is made up of cells that require water to function correctly. Without enough of it, you're more prone to early aging, dryness, tightness, and flakiness.

Your skin is also low on the priority list when it comes to how your body works -- your vital organs also need water and typically get first dibs. This makes it incredibly important to take in enough fluids.

According to the Mayo Clinic, women need around 2.7 liters of water each day. Men need around 3.7. You don't have to drink all of it -- a portion of your fluid intake can come from the food you eat. Tip: fruits and veggies are great choices for this.

Protect Yourself from the Sun

Getting too much sun causes short-term and long-term damage to your skin. UV rays penetrate deep, causing age spots, wrinkles, sagging, and sometimes skin cancer.

If it's not possible to completely stay out of the sun, you need to protect yourself in other ways, like using an SPF 30 sunscreen about 20 minutes before going out. This is especially important if you'll be outside between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Many moisturizers, lotions, and makeup brands include sunscreen in their products. Don't forget to reapply it throughout the day!

Keeping covered with a hat and sunglasses is also important. Some clothing is even designed to protect your skin from harmful rays.

Get Moving

Exercise does wonders for your skin, and spring is the perfect time of year to reboot your fitness regime.

Exercising increases the flow of blood throughout the body. This blood flow brings your cells vital nutrients and oxygen, helping your skin to repair itself. It also carries away harmful free radicals, which cause skin damage.

When you exercise, it reduces the levels of cortisol in your body. Cortisol -- sometimes called the "stress hormone" -- has a major impact on your skin. High levels of it can make your glands create more oil, leading to breakouts. It also causes collagen loss. Collagen is an important protein that keeps your skin firm and supple. Without it, your skin begins to wrinkle and sag.
